Sanitary Napkin Vending Machines installed in MeitY

CSC SPV has installed Sanitary Vending Machines in MeitY Women Restrooms. This will benefit women employees availing Sanitary Pads in the ministry. Based on the success and learning of this initiative, further similar vending machines will be installed at the other Public and Private institutions. Stree Swabhiman Initiative was launched in partnership with Common Service Centres (CSCs). Under this initiative, Common Service Centres (CSC) will provide access to affordable, reliable and modern (eco -friendly) sanitary napkins (menstrual pads) to adolscent girls and women in rural areas.

Germany introduced world’s first hydrogen powered train

Germany launched the world’s first hydrogen-powered train. The hydrogen-powered train technology is costlier but eco-friendly. The two bright blue Coradia iLint trains are built by French TGV-maker Alstom. It runs a 100km between the towns and cities of Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervoerde and Buxtehude in northern Germany.

 

Union Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurates the first ever India tourism Mart 2018

The Union Minister for Railways and Coal, Shri Piyush Goyal inaugurated the ‘first ever’ India Tourism Mart (ITM 2018) in the presence of Union Tourism Minister, Shri K J Alphons and the Tourism Minister of Morocco, Mr. Mohamed Sajid, in New Delhi.

 

Uttar Pradesh Police to launch first-ever ‘dial-FIR’ scheme

In this scheme, a common man can register regular crimes without going to a police station, by dialing the emergency number UP 100 and file an FIR, a call-based FIR. An e-FIR or dial-FIR scheme is the FIR (first information report) that sets the law into motion and to start investigation.

 

Supreme Court lifts ban on Saridon, 3 other FDCs

The Supreme Court of India on September 17, 2018 allowed the sale of popular painkiller Saridon and three other banned fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) in medical stores across the country. The apex court has allowed the sale of Piramal Healthcare's Saridon, GlaxoSmithKline's Piriton, Juggat Pharma's Dart and another drug.

 

PM Modi to launch projects worth over 500 crore rupees in Varanasi.

The main projects are to be inaugurated are Integrated Power Development Scheme for Puraani Kashi and an Atal Incubation Centre at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He will distribute 500 bee boxes under Honey mission and various electric based machines to the porters and artisans.

PayU India gets RBI approval to operate its own NBFC. The main aim of this move is to promote inclusive growth in the country by catering to the diverse financial needs of various segments of the society.

 

World's first hydrogen train rolls out in Germany

Germany launched world's first hydrogen-powered passenger train on September 16, 2018. The locomotives, built by the French train-maker firm, Alstom, entered regular service from September 17 onwards, operating on a 62 mile stretch of line in northern Germany. Hydrogen trains are equipped with fuel cells that produce electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, a process that leaves steam and water as the only emissions. This makes the cells a promising energy source that produces zero emissions and very little noise.

 

Brookfield to buy Ambani’s Reliance gas pipeline for Rs 14,000 crore

Canada based Brookfield Asset Management is set to buy loss-making East West Pipeline Ltd (EWPL), earlier known as Reliance Gas Transportation Infrastructure, for an enterprise valuation of Rs 14,000 crore ($2 billion).

 

Infosys Acquires Finnish Company ‘Fluido’ For Rs 545 Crore

Infosys has acquired Finnish company Fluido, a top consulting partner of Salesforce, for 65 million euros (about Rs 545 crore).This is Infosys’s second acquisition under CEO Salil Parekh.

Director of Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas has been appointed as Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission.

 

Virat Kohli, Mirabai Chanu recommended for 2018 Khel Ratna Award

India cricket captain Virat Kohli and World champion weightlifter Mirabai Chanu were jointly recommended for this year’s Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award – the country’s highest sporting honour. If approved by Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Kohli will become the third cricketer to get the Khel Ratna after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar (1997) and the double world cup-winning captain skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2007).

 

Anna Rajam Malhotra, first Indian woman IAS officer, passed away

Anna Rajam Malhotra, first Indian woman IAS officer after Independence, died in Mumbai on 17th September. She was 91 years old. The officer worked under seven Chief Ministers and at the Central government.

MC Mary Kom clinches gold medal in Silesian Open boxing

Indian five-time world boxing champion M C Mary Kom today clinched her third gold medal of the year in 48 kg category, while Jyoti Gulia picked up the country's lone gold in 51 kg of the youth category of the Silesian Open boxing Tournament for women in Gliwice, Poland.

 

September 18 is World Bamboo Day

Every year September 18 is celebrated as World Bamboo Day. World Bamboo Day is a day of celebration to increase the awareness of bamboo globally. Where bamboo grows naturally, bamboo has been a daily element, but its utilization has not always been sustainable due to exploitation.

 

DRDO successfully tests anti-tank missile

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on 16th September successfully tested a low weight indigenously developed man-portable anti-tank guided missile (MPATGM) at its Ahmednagar range. It was the second MPATGM test, the second test was held on 15th September. The MPATGM is a third-generation anti-tank guided missile (ATGM), which has been under development by DRDO in partnership with Indian defense contractor VEM Technologies Ltd. since 2015.

 

Kerala Tourism wins two Pacific Asia Travel Association gold awards

Kerala Tourism has won two prestigious gold awards of Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) for its innovative marketing campaigns. These awards were won by Kerala Tourism’s Yalla Kerala print campaign and Live Inspired Posters under PATA’s Travel Advertisement Print and Travel Poster categories respectively.

 

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge sets new marathon world record

Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record in Berlin, smashing the previous best as he clocked 2 hour 1 minute 39 second. The 33-year-old Olympic champion, aided by a string of pacemakers through to 25km of the 42.195 km race, took 1 minute 17 second off the previous best set four years ago by Dennis Kimetto. It was the largest single improvement on the marathon world record since Derek Clayton improved the mark by 2:23 in 1967.

 

SBI appointed new CFO

State Bank of India announced that Prashant Kumar has taken charge as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Bank. Before Kumar, Anshula Kant, who has been promoted as Managing Director of SBI, was the CFO.

 

Sakshi Malik settles for Silver medal at Medved Intl Wrestling

Rio Olympics Bronze medalist Sakshi Malik settled for a Silver medal at the Medved International Wrestling tournament at Minsk, Belarus last night. In the Final of the 62 kg category, Sakshi lost to Hungary's Marianna Sastin, 2-6 to finish second best.

 

Centre to merge Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank, Dena Bank

The Centre proposed the merger of state-owned Bank of Baroda, Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank in order to create India’s third-largest bank.  The decision was made during the ministerial panel meeting that oversees merger proposals of state-owned banks. It was headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

 

PSLV-C42 launches 2 foreign satellites

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C42) of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched two satellites -- NovaSAR and S1-4 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota. The satellites belong to UK-based Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), which has a contract with Antrix Corporation Ltd, the commercial arm of ISRO.

 

PNB bagged Hindi implementation award Rajbhasha Kirti

State-run Punjab National Bank (PNB) bagged the “Rajbhasha Kirti” award for outstanding performance in implementing the Official Language Policy during 2017-18, the bank said. The award, under the category of ‘Nationalised Banks and Financial Institutions in Region A’, was presented by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu to PNB Chief Executive and MD Sunil Mehta, the bank said in a statement here.

 

Jaipur Literature Festival Begins In Houston

The festival is the world’s largest free literary gathering, started with a soulful music performance by Indian Sufi singer Zila Khan.

India and United States joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas 2018 commenced at Chaubattia, Uttarakhand. It will be 14th edition of exercise in Yudh Abhyas series which was started in 2004 under US Army Pacific Partnership Program. This will be fourth time exercise will be conducted at Chaubattia in Uttarakhand

Pravasi Conference rescheduled

The 15th edition of the event will be held in January 2019 in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency, and close to the site of the 'Ardh Kumbh' in Allahabad. Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is a celebratory day observed on 9 January by the Republic of India to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India. The day commemorates the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai on 9 January 1915.

 

India’s 102-year-old female athlete wins gold medal at World Masters

Man Kaur, a 102-year-old Chandigarh-based athlete, won the 200m race in the 100-104 age group category at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Spain.  Last year, Man Kaur won 100m gold at the World Masters Games at Auckland, New Zealand. World Masters game is considered as an Olympics for senior citizens.

 

NABARD approves Rs 65,634.93 crore loan for 93 irrigation projects

Around 18 projects have been completed. Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) is a national mission to improve farm productivity and ensure better utilization of the resources in the country. The budget of Rs. 53 billion (US$740 million) in a time span of one year 2015-2016 has been allocated to this scheme.

 

Writer Brij Katyal passes away

Veteran film writer Brij Katyal, who penned the story of Shashi Kapoor-Nanda hit “Jab Jab Phool Khile”, passed away at a hospice in suburban Bandra.

 

World’s first private passenger selected

The first person to fly around the moon has been selected. Elon Musk’s space transportation company SpaceX has signed it. The SpaceX lunar tourism mission is a proposed private mission by SpaceX to fly space tourists around the Moon.

On December 19, 1994, the UN General Assembly proclaimed September 16 to be the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

First ever dedicated dog park was constructed in Hyderabad

The park is spread across an area of 1.3 acres. It was developed by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) at a cost of Rs 1.1 crore. It is certified by the Kennel Club of India.

National Hindi Divas: 14th September

National Hindi Divas is observed every year on 14 September in Hindi speaking regions of India and other countries with Hindi speaking population. Observance of this day aims to propagate Hindi language and its cultural heritage and values. It also seeks to promote Hindi as matra bhasha (mother tongue) of India and show its importance as a language in country and world at large.

 

Hangzhou to host 2022 Asian Para Games

With 19 days to go before the opening of the third Asian Para Games in Jakarta, the Asian Paralympics Committee (APC)confirmed that Hangzhou in China will host the fourth edition in 2022.

Northern Philippines was hit by powerful Typhoon Mangkhut with destructive winds and heavy rain that set off landslides and destroyed homes on Saturday, leaving at least 12 people dead, as Hong Kong and other parts of southern China braced for the powerful storm.

Uttarakhand ranked best among states in PMGSY

Uttarakhand has been ranked the best among states in the country for the construction of maximum number of roads under the PMGSY during 2017-2018. The state constructed a maximum of 1,839 kilometer roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana against a target of 1,500 km set for the year 2017-18.

 

Iraq replaces Saudi as top oil supplier to India in August

Ahead of US sanctions on Iranian oil, Iraq has replaced Saudi Arabia as India’s largest oil supplier in August. Iran remained the third biggest oil supplier to India in August. The US is reimposing sanctions on Iran following its decision in May to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal.

 

Moutaz Mousa Abdallah becomes Sudan’s new PM

Moutaz Mousa Abdallah has become the Sudan’s new Prime Minister. A 21-member cabinet was sworn in at the presidential palace in Khartoum.

 

World no 1 Airport in 5-15 Million Passengers Per Annum category

Hyderabad International Airport (Rajiv Gandhi International Airport) was awarded Airports Council International Airport Service Quality World no.1 airport award in the 5-15 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) category. This is for the second consecutive year Hyderabad airport has won this award.

 

India ranks 130 in UN’s human development index

India climbed one spot to 130 among 189 countries in the latest human development index released by the United Nations Development Programme.

Jaipur-based poet and writer Sawai Singh Shekhawat will be honored with Meera Puruskar by Rajasthan Sahitya Academy for his contribution to Hindi literature.

IWC defeated the proposal to create Whale Sanctuary

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) defeated a proposal to create a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic at a meeting in Brazil. The proposal received support from 39 countries but was opposed by 25. Brazil first introduced the proposal in 2001.

 

Udhayveer Singh wins individual gold in jr. men's 25m pistol event

Udhayveer Singh has won an individual Gold Medal in Junior Men's 25 metre pistol event in the World Shooting Championships in South Korea. The 52nd ISSF World Shooting Championships are held in Changwon, South Korea from 2 to 14 September 2018.

 

IATO’s 34th annual convention held at Visakhapatnam

The 34th annual convention of one of India’s biggest inbound travel trade associations, the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), started with a grand opening in Visakhapatnam. Arriving on time for the inauguration, K J Alphons, Minister of State (IC) for Tourism, Govt of India, graced the event that saw an overwhelming attendance from IATO members pan India.

 

Suresh Prabhu to take part in G-20 meet in Argentina

Commerce and Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu will participate in G-20 trade and investment ministerial meeting at Mar del Plata in Argentina. Issues including increasing protectionism, challenges to promote global commerce and new industrial revolution are expected to be discussed at the meeting. The G20 members include India, Argentina, Brazil, China, the US, EU, France, Gemaany among others.

 

National Scholarship Portal Mobile App launched

Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi launched the country’s first National Scholarship Portal Mobile App (NSP Mobile App) in New Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Navqi said, this Portal will ensure a smooth, accessible and hassle-free scholarship system for students belonging to poor and weaker sections.

 

Google’s Mailing App ‘Inbox’ to discontinue from March 2019

Google is set to shut down its alternate mailing app “Inbox” in March 2019, giving users time to shift to the traditional Gmail by then, the company has said in a blog post.

 

Jharkhand govt introduces electric cars for official use

The state government of Jharkhand on September 12, 2018 introduced electric vehicles for official use. The energy department of the state got 20 such cars for its use. The information was shared by the state’s Chief Minister Raghubar Das. The state’s energy department received 20 cars in the first phase. With the development, Jharkhand has become the fifth state of India and the first state in eastern India to procure the ecofriendly vehicles for government use. Prior to Jharkhand, the governments of Delhi, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have procured electric cars for official purpose.

 

Padma Bhushan economist VS Vyas passes away

Padma Bhushan awardee and noted agricultural economist Vijay Shankar Vyaspassed away in Jaipur after a brief illness. He was 87.
