AAI asked SpiceJet to pay Rs.20 crore by 30th November

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) served a notice to SpiceJet asking it to pay Rs.20 crore by 30th November to partially clear its dues. AAI claimed that the airline’s dues have crossed the 80% threshold of its security deposit. As per the AAI norms, all the carriers are supposed to keep their dues within 80% of their security deposit with the State-run aerodrome operator.

 

Himachal Pradesh first state to launch single emergency number ‘112’

Himachal Pradesh became the first state to launch a pan-India single emergency number ‘112’ where all kinds of immediate help can be sought in urgent matters. Under this project, an Emergency Response Centre (ERC) has been established in Shimla along with 12 district command centres (DCCs), covering the entire state.

 

West Bengal Green University renamed as Rani Rashmoni Green University

The West Bengal Assembly passed the West Bengal Green University (Amendment) Bill 2018 to rename the West Bengal Green University as Rani Rashmoni Green University. The decision to rename the university was taken to commemorate the 225th birth anniversary of Lokmata Rani Rashmoni.

 

Electric cars set to replace diesel, petrol vehicles in Telangana State offices

The Telangana government offices are soon to make way for electric cars as the State aims at promoting non-polluting vehicles. The government has brought in the Electric Mobility Policy 2018-2023 to encourage the use of carbon-free cars.

Donbass, a Ukrainian film won Golden Peacock award

Donbass, a Ukrainian film directed by Sergei Loznitsa, won the coveted Golden Peacock award at the 49th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) at Panaji, Goa on 28th November. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.40 lakh, a trophy, and a citation.

Vijay Varma and P. Rajkumar were awarded the Asian of the Year awards

Indian Navy commander Vijay Varma and Captain P. Rajkumar were among those honored at the ‘Asian of The Year’ awards at Singapore on 28th November. The two were acknowledged for their selfless service and bravery in rescue operations during the Kerala floods.

In a recent NASSCOM-Zinnov report, India has emerged as the third largest startup hub in the world. According to the report, Bangalore, Delhi-NCR and Mumbai are the top cities which have seen a tremendous growth in startups, with Bangalore becoming one of the fastest growing technology startup hubs.

IFFI has nominated 12 movies for this year’s International Council for Film

The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) has nominated 12 movies for this year’s International Council for Film, Television and Audio-visual Communication (ICFT) UNESCO Gandhi Medal. Of these 12 films, two are from India and the rest are foreign movies. The two Indian movies competing for the honour are Tamil film Baaram and Ladakhi movie Walking with the Wind.

 

International Gita Festival, 2018 to be held in Kurukshetra

The International Gita Festival 2018 will be organised in Kurukshetra in Haryana from December 7 to 23, 2018. This year it is third year of this mega cultural event, where Mauritius is partner country and Gujarat is the partner state. Gita festival will also be organised in Mauritius next February.

 

Arvind Saxena appointed as Chairman of UPSC

Saxena will have a tenure till August 7, 2020, when he attains the age of 65 years. He has been working as acting head of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) since June 20. He took over charge from Vinay Mittal who had completed his term.

 

Azim Premji will receive the Knight of the Legion of Honour France’s Hightest Civillian Award

Tech magnate and philanthropist Premji will receive the Knight of the Legion of Honour or Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur from Ambassador of France to India, Alexandre Ziegler. Indian recipients who have received this prestigious award include Shah Rukh Khan as well as Bengali actor Soumitra Charrerjee.

 

Anupam Roy has won the FICA Emerging Artist Award 2018

Delhi-based artist Anupam Roy has won the FICA Emerging Artist Award 2018, which is granted by Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art (FICA) for his large-scale drawings and paintings speak about systemic violence and injustice. As part of the award, he would receive a 90-day residency in Switzerland in 2019, supported by Pro Helvetia, Swiss Arts Council, which would help develop his practice and in forging further artistic collaborations.

 

Keshav Ginde will be conferred the 2018 Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Lifetime Achievement Award

Renowned flautist Pandit Keshav Ginde will be conferred the 2018 prestigious Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Lifetime Achievement (LTA) Award for Classical Music. He born in 1942 in Belgaum, Karnataka. In the fest, Mauritius will be the partner country and Gujarat the partner state.

UN selects Noida to participate in Global Sustainable Cities 2025 plan

The United Nations selected Uttar Pradesh’s Noida and Greater Noida to participate in its Global Sustainable Cities 2025 initiative. The twin-cities in Gautam Buddh Nagar district, adjoining the national capital, have been selected in the “University City” category ahead of Mumbai and Bengaluru as the only invitee from India.

 

Bihar Chief Minister unveils Lord Buddha’s 70-feet statue in Bihar’s Rajgir

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar unveiled a 70-feet tall statue of Lord Buddha at Rajgir in Nalanda district. It is the second tallest statue of Buddha in the country. The Chief Minister said this place will be developed as a centre of eco-tourism.

Centre and ADB sign 200 Million dollar loan pact to upgrade State Highways in Bihar

The Centre and Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a 200 million dollar loan agreement to finance widening and upgrading of about 230 Kilometers State Highways in Bihar to all-weather standards with road safety features.

 

Monaco will host the 2019 Laureus Awards

The ‘Oscars of sports’, the Laureus World Sports Awards 2019 will be held in Monaco on February 18 next year. Sport’s premier global awards ceremony will celebrate the best of 2018 across eight individual and team categories, with the winners collecting a prized Laureus Statuette. Former India cricket captains Kapil Dev, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar are members of the Laureus Academy.

 

Australia clinched Women’s World Twenty20 title

Australia clinched Women’s World Twenty20 title by defeating England in the final of the Women’s World T20 tournament. This is Australia’s 4th title win at Women’s World T20 in 6 editions of the tournament. West Indies hosted the event.

 

A.R. Rahman has composed the Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup-2018 anthem

Recently, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik released the Odisha Men’s Hockey World Cup-2018 anthem in the presence of music director A R Rahman here who has composed the music for it. The lyrics for the Hockey World Cup anthem ‘Jai Hind, Jai India’ have been penned by well known lyricist Gulzar.

BCCI announces two-year ban for age frauds

From the 2018-19 season, any cricketer who is found guilty of tampering his/her date of birth will be disqualified and barred from participating in any BCCI tournament for a period of 2 years i.e. 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. Earlier, a cricketer faced a ban of one year. In September, the BCCI had banned a Meghalya-bound Delhi player, Jaskirat Singh Sachdeva, for producing a fake birth certificate to play in an Under-19 tournament.

 

Nahid Afrin was appointed as the first ‘Youth Advocate’ of the north eastern region by UNICEF

Popular Assamese singer, Nahid Afrin was appointed as the first ‘Youth Advocate’ of the north eastern region by the United Nations Children’s Fund, (UNICEF) to fight for child rights at an event held in Guwahati. Nahid Afrin from Assam made her playback debut in 2016 in the Bollywood film Akira, starring Sonakshi Sinha and won several awards.

Harmanpreet Kaur named captain of ICC Women’s World Twenty20 XI

India’s batting star Harmanpreet Kaur was named captain of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 XI, which also featured opener Smriti Mandhana and leg-spinner Poonam Yadav. A selection panel of ICC in Dubai picked up the team on the basis of the players’ performances in the tournament. Three players from England, two from Australia and one each from Pakistan, New Zealand and West Indies have also been named in the eleven.

 

HRD instructed No homework for Class 1 and 2 students

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has instructed all states and Union Territories to create guidelines to regulate teaching, wherein it has asked them to follow a ‘no homework policy’ for class 1 and 2 students. It further asked for regulation of weight of school bags.

 

UP government to build 221m statue of Lord Ram, will be world’s tallest

The Uttar Pradesh government has cleared the plans to build a 221-metre-tall bronze statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya, which will be the world’s tallest statue. While the actual statue would be 151-metre tall, the structure would have a 20-metre umbrella and a 50-metre-high pedestal.

Bhavani Devi is the first Indian to wins the gold medal in the Sabre event in the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2018 by defeating England’s Emily Ruaux which is held in Canberra, Australia.

 

Sameer Verma wins his 2nd straight Syed Modi International title

24-year-old Indian shuttler Sameer Verma defeated Lu Guangzu of China in the men’s singles final to win his second straight Syed Modi International Badminton Championship title. Sameer is the second Indian male shuttler after Kashyap Parupalli to win the tournament twice.
